The problems are so overwhelming and deeply entrenched, we are lulled into inaction. But sometimes, the solutions are so clear, we find the confidence to forge ahead.
Poverty has a huge carbon footprint. The lack of cash and job opportunities drive households to subsistence survival. Poor households depend on nature's bounty for food and cooking fuels. Firewood from mangroves and forest are essential to sustain lives.
A household caught in the poverty trap (earning about US$1/day) uses about 9 tons/yr of firewood for cooking . This denudes forests and mangroves.
But mangroves and forests are also nature's carbon sponge or sink.
One hectare of thriving mangroves could absorb about 20 tons of carbon per year. One hectare of denuded mangrove could release about 1,000 tons of carbon when the top one meter of soil is disturbed or eroded. Protecting and restoring mangroves is a not only a cheap and fast way to absorb carbon emissions, it is also a necessary step to avoid huge emissions.
Food From Thin Air, Inc. creates livelihoods that provide replacement cooking fuels to protect mangroves and forests. These livelihoods also provide cash income to households caught in the poverty trap for food and other basic needs.
Our carbon offsets, one ton of carbon emission, is more than a one-time reduction. Mangrove and forest wood saved from destruction absorbs carbon year after year.
